Deeply saddened by his death, today I thought to pay a tribute to my music teacher, Ustad Zafar Ali Khan, who passed away last month. As deeply sad as I am about to know that he is no longer with us, I went down the memory lane to recall the classes I took with him last year. I found out about him through announcement made by T2F (the second floor) on facebook. I got enrolled to find out (lucky for me) that I was the only student there. I met Ustad Sb. He was charming, friendly and of course superbly talented.
We started off with the basics and proceeded to a few raag and raagnis. Of course I never was able to learn the whole thing, but got some hang of them, but about that, some other time. Today I just wanted to share some recordings of the recording sessions I had with him and a few of his videos available online.
I keep listening to this personal recording of mine with him and I cannot praise enough his voice quality.
Baant Chalat Mori Chunari
This is his family owned, Gwaliyar Gharan Bandish which he tried to teach me. I made a lame attempt, but towards the end of the audio, he took over and sang it in his beautiful, rich and enchanting voice
Khuda Kare Ke Mohabbat Mein
Ustad Zafar Ali Khan had respect for Mehdi Hasan Khan Sb. He tried to teach me this famous ghazal of him,Khuda Kare Ke mohabbat mein. A tiny recording of it is in this video

His live session at The Second Floor (T2F)
His voice still rings out in my memory. Its amazing the grasp on music people like him have and these days maybe we don’t appreciate it enough. The youth should know this heritage we are part of. Thanks for sharing.
Honestly, his voice touches the heart. Awaz ka utar jarao bohut zabardast. It’s true nowadays we don’t appreciate such people as much as they deserve.
