Pakistan’s Ghazal music so deeply romantic, touching and full of soul, that if someone would ask me to pick one favorite, i would certainly won’t be able to do so. Yet, this one ghazal, always always stands out. I am listening to it while I write this and I am engrossed in the romance of the poetry, the melody and lyrics. Nothing, no one ghazal can be compared to this Ghazal which I rate as the Ghazal of all times. Written by Fayyaz Hashmi, the Ghazal is sung by a number of artists. It eventually became popular in India, when it was used in the Bollywood Flick, Monsoon Wedding. Guess our film producer never thought of that. The best thing Mira Nair did, while using it in Monsoon Wedding was to use the version sung by Farida Khanum. Hats off to her!
Coming back to the Ghazal itself. I haven’t read a more beautiful way a poet has expressed the desperation of a lover, who helplessly requests his/her love to stay, stay for the while. This part, Jaan jaati jab uth ke jaate ho tum, in so intensely powerful, the lover expressing the feelings of sheer emptiness and lifelessness for the moment his/her lover departs.
Someone with limited vocabulary like me may not be able to paraphrase the ghazal, so I leave for you too read and let the poetry grow on you. Oh yes, and as always, you can download the free mp3 version of it from below
Download Aaaj Jane Ki Zid Na Karo by Farida Khanum
The Lyrics:
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don’t insist on leaving
Yunhi pehlu mein bethey raho
Sit here close to me
Haaye mar jaayein ge
I will die
Hum to lutt jaayein ge
I will be lost
Aisi baatein kiya na karo
Don’t say such things
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don’t insist on leaving
Tumhi socho zara
Just ponder for a second
kyu’n na rokein tumhey
Why shouldn’t I stop you?
jaan jaati hai jab uth ke jaatey ho tum
When my life leaves every time you go
tum ko apni qasam jaan-e-jaa’n
I swear to you, my love
baat itni meri maan lo
Listen to my one request
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don’t insist on leaving
Waqt ki qaed mein zindagi hai magar
Life is trapped in time’s prison but
chand gharriya’n yahi hain jo aazaad hain
These are the few moments that are free
inko khho kar kaheen jaan-e-jaa\’n
By losing them, my love
umr bhar na tarastey raho
Don’t start a life of regret
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don’t insist on leaving
Kitna masoom aur rangeen hai yeh sama
How innocent and colorful is the weather
husn aur ishq ki aaj me\’raj hai
It is the reign of beauty and love
kal ki kis ko khabar jaan-e-jaa\’n
Who knows what tomorrow will bring
rok lo aaj ki raat ko
Let’s stop this night right here
Aaj jaane ki zid na karo
Tonight, don’t insist on leaving
Really, it is a beautiful ghazal and more beautifully sung… You just smile and think about the beauty of these emotions while listening to it.

Set the records and fact straight. This ghazal was originally sung by Habib Wali Mohammad. Then stolen by many including Fareeda Khanam, Asha Bhonsle etc. Bollywood always steals genuine music from others.
